These pictures and this story are a joy. Yes, this is a Scottish holiday

Love the story Helen, and the pics are so good. We like people in our pics because with people there is always a story. All three of them are lovely. Thank you

Hello John and Gillian,

We had an absolutely brilliant holiday. We were so impressed with how well equipped your cottage is, you seem to have thought of everything we could possibly need. Thank you also for all your info on walks and things to see, really helpful.

Right where did we go: The Gondola on the Glen Nevis range, fab views from the top, also the Glencoe mountain ski range, lift up and walked down, Quite a challenging walk to the hidden/lost valley, which we loved, Lighthouse at Ardnamurchan, lovely scenery all the way, Stalker castle cafe, Ferry across to Lismore (should have allowed our selves more time on the island), Cuil Bay, Signal Rock, the lovely walk on Glen Nevis to I think it was Steall falls, had a drive around the beautiful Loch Leven, a visit to Oban, including the sea life centre and the distillery, also drove out to Invermorriston  and enjoyed a picnic by the river, a rather scary drive in the rain along the road that goes nowhere to Loch Etive, Oh, and climbed the ‘small’ hill behind the Duror hall. We were huffing and puffing, a wake up call that we need to get fitter! We enjoyed meals at the Holly Tree and the Clachaig Inn.

It is hard to say what was our favourite thing, we loved it all; but I think we both particularly enjoyed the walk to the hidden valley despite a freezing cold wade through a mountain stream to get there!

The weather was no worse than we expected, the first couple of days were good, one day very soggy and the rest a mixture, will send you pictures of us on the soggy day. We noticed that there doesn’t seem to be any such thing as drizzle in Scotland, just three drops as a warning, then a downpour. Thank heavens for whisky! ( or Real ale for Tim).

Thank you again for everything, we will definitely visit Scotland again, there was so much more we wanted to see.

Best wishes,
Tim and Helen Eustace

The Highlands are what you make of them. They can be BRILLIANT- it is up to you

We received this lovely email from David and Kim who stayed last week. Thank you, you two. It is comments like this that make it so worthwhile letting the cottage. The Ardnamurchan scene shot by David has hardly altered since the volcano erupted there 55 million years ago. I think his photograph of Kim is lovely. Scotland is what you make it - if you are looking for South of France weather then you will not enjoy it.

We never had a day without rain, but we were never 'washed out' for the day - all that was needed was the right clothing!  We had four walks, Ben Hiant on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Pap of Glen Coe, Steall Falls and Meall Cumhann, and the Lost Valley in Glen Coe. Saw herds of red deer from Ben Hiant, wonderful rainbows from the Pap, golden eagle from Meall Cumhann and with the rain all the rivers were full so the waterfalls were impressive. Never got any high level walks done, limited visibility in low cloud was one issue, but gale force winds on the summits was the main concern. We'd hoped to get some climbing done, but the rocks were not dry enough to make it enjoyable. We did spend a rainy morning at the indoor climbing wall in Kinlochleven; some good routes in the 15m main hall. Also had a great afternoon there ice climbing; highly recommended (we are also now deemed competent for our next visit to just book a session and look after ourselves!).  Did the tourist bit around the cafes and shops of Fort William, and completed a circuit of Loch Ness via Inverness for lunch and the Culloden battlefield site (again, recommended; very good visitor centre). Very much looking forward to returning later in the year.

Rebekka - what an enthusiast!

Aren't our guests the nicest people you can ever meet? It is a joy to rent out this cottage. Rebekka stayed with us in November just before the cold set in and we all iced up. The photo is of the Holly tree Hotel just a stroll up the road from us
Hello John!
We had a wonderful week thank you! We arrived about 6pm Monday evening and decided rather than trying to find a shop that we'd treat ourselves, so we headed to the Holly Tree for a bar meal :)Tuesday we ventured into Fort William, did a food shop, had a walk through the town, and then spent the afternoon back at the cottage watching movies on the sofa :) We then ventured back to Fort William in the evening to go out for a meal at a place called Loch Iall I think (I'll double check!!- it is Loch Eil -Ed).. On Wednesday we went up to LochNess for the afternoon.. we figured after travelling 400 miles, another 60 wasn't going to kill us!! Lovely afternoon!! We then went back to the HollyTree for dinner that evening, but ate in the restaurant this time.. Thursday, I spent the morning in doing some university work (so I'm not totally behind when I go back tomorrow!!), my partner went for a 16km walk around the local area.. We then went to the Ben Nevis pub in Fort William for lunch.
The weather was good to us.. It only rained when we were in the car! Tuesday night and Wednesday were VERY windy though. I meant to leave the cleaner a note to apologise for not leaving the bin out the front, but we'd have lost the bin it was that windy.. They were scattered everywhere!!
I'll send you all the photos I took when I find the camera cable! I took one of a gorgeous sunrise Friday morning, it was about an hour's drive from the cottage, but I'm still very chuffed with it!!
I've also decided to start a food blog about all the places I go for meals.. Me and my partner regularly go out and thought it would be fun to do, so once it's up, I'll link you to it - Scotland will be the first entries :)
Many thanks for letting us use the cottage. I had a super time!!!
Rebekka.

Walking in Glencoe. Don't bother with the rain. Just do it.

Lovely email from Alistair, thank you A and for permission with the photos. You know, bothering about rain is a townie thing. True visitors don't bother too much about the weather - of course, it can get so awful day after day that you just get fed up. Yes, we've been there too. But look at this story. If you click on the title to this post then you can get Alistair's photos on Flickr, and they are lovely. I honestly do like pics with people in them.

Hi John,
The weather was wet and wild after the first day, but cleared up towards the end of the week. It is definitely Autumn up there now! We still did plenty of walking and other things though.
While the weather was bad we managed to do the Hidden Valley walk in Glen Coe, the Pap of Glen Coe and then a low level walk up Glen Duror to James of the Glen's house that has now been converted to a bothy. A nice walk with an interesting destination to do on a wet or very windy day as it is nice and sheltered in the trees. On the final day the wind died down a bit and we did Bidean am Bienn which was really good fun.
Also while the wind picked up over the summits we went to the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven to have a go on their high wire and do some ice climbing. The staff there are brilliant, really friendly and offered us 2 for 1 ice climbing lessons after we had gone on their high wire. We drove down Oban to have a look around and do some whisky tasting.
We mostly cooked some cosy meals in for ourselves but had a few nice nights out at the Holly Tree restaurant which served very tasty local food. We also had to go to Fort William for our customary battered haggis and chips supper :-)
Thanks for a great week,
Alistair

To-day Fort William won the Camanachd Cup, for the 4th time in a row

Shaking hands after the game - not true, I made this up
Originally uploaded by ufopilot

To-day Fort William won the Camanachd Cup for the 4th time in a row at Inverness. This is shinty we are talking about - this cup is the tops, the absolute tops in the sport. I'm telling you this, because a key player in the forward line of the Fort William team is John MacDonald, the husband of Michelle, our housekeeper.

John is the nicest, gentlest, softest sort of chap you could meet, unfailingly polite, always helpful. Except on a shinty pitch.

The game of shinty is older than the recorded history of Scotland. Christianity came after shinty and it is reputed that St Columba tried to pacify the players without success so he turned his attention to a lesser target, the Vikings.

Shinty is based roughly on hockey but with a lot of blood added. You can whack the opponents head, er sorry, ball, with either side of the stick. The hockey stick is kept below waist height but in shinty it was found that you can't do enough damage that way so they let you, indeed encourage you, to hit the ball in the air.

To start the game they throw the ball in the air and hit it. If the referee is English they throw him instead.

The game is absolutely splendid to watch, and we are very proud to know John. They have won it four years in a row, and it gets harder every year. Everyone, without exception are after Fort William. They don't win everything in the League, but they do go for this Cup, big time.

Well done, really good result. Could you do it a bit earlier than the last minute another time please lads?

John

A wonderful trip to Fort William

Gill and I have just had the loveliest day. To Fort William and back - how boring, not. Sunshine and showers.

We amble across the little Corran ferry. Good job we have a disabled ticket at half price, 3.10p. Calmac and the others pushed the prices up when the oil price climbed last year.

I'm sure they were anxious to take the prices down again when oil dropped, but they just couldn't bring themselves to do it. Sleepless nights around the boardroom, I'm sure.

Cormorants and shags clustering on a different rock from usual as we drive. We stop for a while at Ardgour, watching the fishermen. This is the best fishing area if you get the tide right. Not a spectator sport, really, but pleasant. Masses of solitary herons. If we stop they always wait a mo, then amble off lazily.

We are on the little used single track road on the West side of Loch Linnhe.

Only two cars come the other way in 40 minutes of driving. We are heading for Glenfinnan for coffee.. Coming back, a magnificent double rainbow alongside us to the North, Ben Nevis ahead, wow! The top is occasionally clear. Past Charles Kennedy's old school.

A final amble back to Cuil Bay, look at the 700 year old bridge, look at the little island where the Columban monk lived for 16 years. Watch the Oyster catchers on the beach.

Brilliant.

Glencoe cottage weeks available June 6th/June 27th/July 4th

In our little Glencoe cottage we still have a couple of dates available before the school Summer holidays start. June 6th/June 27th and July 4th are free. You get a £20 discount on the normal rates, too. Just click on the headline above and it takes you to our short breaks availability Glencoe website for details of rates etc.

We had this lovely e-mail recently.

Hi both of you, Thank you for sharing your lovely cottage with us for a week over Easter. Everything we needed was there, it was comfortable and cosy. It certainly is in a beautiful spot and we didn't have any of the driving rain over the loch but lots of bright sunshine so we could do all we wanted to do, including Ben Nevis (which I feel may be once in a lifetime for me - it wasn't easy!) We have photos galore, as screensavers, PC desktop etc etc, I 'm even turning one of the view from Kentallen into a cross stitch scene as a lasting momento! I'd wanted to take my children to the area for many years and it was well worth the wait, we hope to visit again some day. Debbie ....
We really do have nice guests. The cottage is available still for June 6/June 27th/July 4th/July 4th

Amazing weather in Glencoe - right now

Picture shows the Pap of Glencoe from the Kentallen road. Isn't the whole place stunning?

Here is the most amazing thing. Right now, the UK news bulletins are full of horror stories involving cold weather, deep snow in the East of Scotland, cars benighted, emergency services at full stretch, and worse to come. The worst snowfalls in the UK for 20 years they say!

What have we got in our little micro climate at Kentallen? Well, nothing but peace and calm. And we have quite high temperatures.

I've just looked up the weather station report from Mark our neighbour. This is what it says:

Dry, wind wnw force 1, no gusts humidity 55% (quite low). Temperature 6.9C no windchill at Kentallen cottage on 2/2/09 at 20.55.

It is very very much warmer here on the Scottish West Coast than on the East. It is the Gulf Stream and all that which does it.

Here at Kentallen, we have a different climate from Glencoe itself, because Glencoe, although it is just around the corner, is just over the hill. A 3,000 foot hill. And our climate in Kentallen is different again from that on Rannoch Moor. Now the Rannoch plain is one where you definitely do not want to be stuck overnight. Not unless you have a duvet sleeping bag, plenty of spare clothes, and a hot thermos. They'll get you out ok, but you want to be warm and still breathing when they do.

But here at Kentallen, all is peaceful bliss. Snow on the hills of course, brilliant skiing both at the Glencoe centre and at Nevis range. Brilliant high level walks.

By the way our cottage this month costs only £290 for the week. That is half the standard price

John
ps We can sometimes, very occasionally, get horizontal rain driven with the force of an AK47. Oh, very occasionally, of course. "A wee bit damp" they say.

Some wonderful walks

Picture taken from the top of the Pap of Glencoe by our friend David "Cubby" Cuthbertson, the Glencoe mountaineer. He was the body double for the climber in the film Touching The Void.

A couple of weeks ago, our guests staying at the cottage did a huge amount of walking. Look at this programme:

They started out with the big half circle mountain trip around the back of us on day one, the Ballachulish horseshoe. This circles around 3,000 feet, and the mountain grows out of our back garden.

Next day, not having had enough of mountains, they went part way up Ben Nevis in the evening.

Then they walked part of the West Highland Way from Tyndrum to Crianlarich and back. That is a low glen walk, total 13 miles, with a little up and down. They would have passed the remains of a 14th century chapel, St Fillans, granted rights by Robt Bruce four years after his famous victory over the English at Bannockburn near Stirling. Ten years earlier Bruce had won his famous Highland battle near this spot at the Pass of Brander near Cruachan. His opponents were the McDougalls, supporters of Bruces’ rivals for the Crown.

Here is what Wikipedia says about the battle
“A party of loyal Highlanders, commanded by Sir James Douglas, climbed high up the mountain and, completely unobserved, positioned themselves in the enemy's rear. As the Macdougalls attacked they were caught in a vice, with King Robert coming from below and the Black Douglas from above. The men of Argyll wavered and then broke. They were chased westwards across the River Awe all the way back to Dunstaffnage, while John their chief escaped down the Loch in his galley, eventually taking refuge in England.

Later in the week our intrepid guests did the Hidden Valley.......... and loved it. Then, following day, they did the Pap of Glencoe. Whew! that's a lot of walking.

They said “Everywhere.....such wonderful walks and beautiful scenery......spoilt for choice !!”
